This article by GetWeMail gives us a heads up on what are some possible mistakes that marketers commonly make and how we could avoid them while building email lists.
DON'T #1: Buying an email list
On average, the purchased list has only 15-20% healthy emails on average and an even lower opening rate. Therefore, there is a high probability of losing domain reputation.
DON'T #2: TMI - Asking for 'Too much Information'
When a visitor just arrived on your website, you asked them to subscribe with email, and asked too many questions in the form - they left. The point being - let's keep a simpler and shorter opt-in form
DON'T #3: No offers or incentives
Offer your visitors incentives like discounts, a free e-book, or free food to collect their emails. Basically, give them a reason to subscribe with exciting offers and deals that will give them a better experience and add value.
DON'T #4: Placed the form/popup where nobody can see it
One of the most popular options is to position the subscribe option at the exit intent. An optimized opt-in form can help you grow your email list with real subscribers. But make sure it has the position that website visitors will easily notice.
DON'T #5: No welcome email
